Your resume is the first impression of your career and personality. If you are a job seeker who is looking for a job, you might like my post about the reasons why you are not able to find a job yet. It is important to understand all the factors that are not concluding to your success. Resume is of course the first and foremost important factor amongst all others. Through a resume, a recruiter draws a professional sketch of the person whom he or she has never met. A well-written resume must highlight your most relevant qualifications for the job. Only a well drafted resume will help you get selected for an interview. Now you must be thinking – what do I mean by well drafted?  so let’s understand that first.

What a resume should reflect?

When we understand the importance of this document, it is extremely important that it should be error free & impressive. Resumes need to be concise, clear and easy to read. It is very important to consider certain phrases that are sure to make you stand out from the rest. Though the contents are different in each resume based on an individual’s professional experiences. All a  resume gets to put you in the interview room is initial 5 minutes, that the recruiter spends on it. The basic checklist to follow here is :

  • Grammar check
  • Typing errors
  • Achievements & certifications
  • Proper categorization of skills
  • Duration with  dates for each employment
  • Degree and qualification details

Examples of Skills to mention in a Resume

We all have different achievement and career histories. Below are some of the examples to include from your experience. These are general administrative skills applicable to all executive level positions.

MANAGEMENT SKILLS

These are the responsibilities for professionals who are working at Managerial level. More appropriate for Managers where there are subordinates involved. One can use below examples in their resume.

  • Takes team management responsibility
  • Enforces policies
  • Takes and implements decisions effectively

RESEARCH AND PLANNING

These skills can be used in technical positions. In such positions data and analytics play an important role which can be reflected through below examples.

We often find it not necessary to mention about communication skills. As we all feel it’s such a small or unimportant to mention about communication skills. It is very important to mention about communication based on the level you are in your career. It is rightly said that “communication is the key to success”. These are different examples which are applicable at all levels.

  • Confidently speaks in public
  • Gathers appropriate information
  • Speaks effectively
  • listens attentively

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS

This is a personality trait which portrays professional behavior of an employee in an organization. Interpersonal skills are highly influential for senior level positions as they are crucial to manage individuals.

  • Practices emotional intelligence at work
  • Self-confident
  • Good sense of Humor
  • Self starter

Make sure that you can give enough relevant examples for any of the above skills chosen for your resume. Beside other factors there are chances that it’s your resume that gets you among shortlisted candidates. It is very important as a next step that you prepare well for the interview and nail it!
